Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) refers to any
number of diseases that affect the bladder or urethra of
cats. Bacterial infections, renal failure, diabetes, various
types of bladder stones & hyperthyroidism are all diseases
affecting the urinary tract system.
FLUTD can occur at any age, either sex. Most commonly it
is seen in male, middle aged, overweight cats. Male cats
are also susceptible to urinary tract blockage, which requires
immediate treatment.
Stress may be a factor in certain types of inflammation of the
bladder (cystitis), and proper management of stress, along with an
analgesic (to relieve pain) can help with some cats. Keeping
the litterbox clean at all times, having enough litterboxes, and
placement issues can be factors in helping treat (and prevent)
urinary problems.
Having your veterinarian diagnose the disease is the first
step. Treatment can range from diet changes to
medications. If you suspect your cat is showing any of the
symptoms explained above, don't hesitate to call for an
appointment.
