Outpatient Nurses and Veterinary Assistants

Our OPNs (out-patient nurses) are made up of both RVTs and trained veterinary assistants. The out-patient nurse is primarily responsible for admitting patients into exam rooms for their veterinary exams. This includes getting weights, temperatures and collecting important background information and vitals, so the veterinarian is fully prepared when he or she begins the exam. The OPNs also make up the majority of prescriptions and perform the in-house labwork (many of the in-house lab results are finished while you are still here, so the appropriate treatment can begin immediately). OPNs are responsible for keeping our shelves of medications, food, supplements and pet products ordered and stocked. Our dedicated OPNs are always available for technician appointments and phone consults (to help with pet behavior problems, questions regarding the medications dispensed to treat your pet, bereavement counseling, etc.).

What is a Veterinary Technician?  Veterinary technicians offer much of the same care for pets that nurses offer for people.  Credentialed technicians have graduated from a two or four year AVMA-accredited program with an associate's or bachelor's degree in veterinary technology.

Veterinary technology programs teach how to;

obtain and record patient case histories

collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures

provide specialized nursing care

prepare animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery

assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures

expose and develop radiographs

advise and educate animal owners

supervise and train practice personnel

perform dental cleanings

Anita with "Peanut" & "Gretchen"                                             A very rare moment.....Anita relaxing!
('89-'04)                                                                 (with Jake, Gretchen, Lexi & Molly)

Anita Sly, a registered veterinary technician (RVT), joined our clinic in February 1999. She works in our out-patient nursing area of the clinic, keeping things running smoothly for the doctors and keeping everyone on track. She enjoys antique collecting, landscaping, animal husbandry, and camping during her free time. Her free time is limited because she keeps very busy with her many dogs, cats, birds, tortoise, fish, and various rescued and rehabilitated homeless animals.

Sheryl Rust is a veterinary assistant in our out-patient nurse area of the clinic. Her jobs and responsibilities are varied, and she does each task with enthusiasm and professionalism. Sheryl came to us in December 2000, and has brought joy to all of us with her humor and personality. Sheryl loves all water sports, biking, camping painting, and gardening. She also keeps busy with her many pet pals, including two cockers, a cocker mix, a Boxer, a Boxer mix, a Double Yellow-Headed Amazon, a Lilac Crown Amazon, two cockatiels, four corn snakes, an African house snake, two bearded dragons, one Guinea pig, and tropical fish.

Cindy and Conga

Cindy LaValle, R.V.T. is a San Diego native, born and raised in the Bonita area....she took to the road and found some time for a diversion in Las Vegas for a few years, then came back to her hometown where she now resides, works and plays. Her playtime consists of spending time with her four cats, two dogs, and her quarter horse, and when the weather is nice, you can find her with the wind in her hair as she rides her Harley throughout San Diego, Laughlin, Palm Springs, and someday, her dream ride will be to make the long trek to Sturgis for the annual Black Hills Sturgis Rally in South Dakota. Cindy graduated the Mesa College Registered Veterinary Technician program in 2000, and came to us in September of 2003. Cindy splits her time between the out-patient nurse and in-patient nurse areas, providing her expertise in both positions. She also works as a part-time bartender.

(l to r)  Ashley & Michele with Sylvia                        shhhhhhh.........Sylvia & "Slinky"

Sylvia Lee is currently a student at UCSD, majoring in Animal Physiology & Neuroscience. She's hoping to wrap up her undergrad studies and head off to vet school in the next few years. Until then she likes to fill the time between attending class and work at GAC with tennis, climbing, swimming, running, (basically anything besides doing her homework!!).
Being far from her hometown of Sunnyvale and her beloved pets ("Marshmallow", a Bichon mix, "Cookie", a doxie, "Pippen", a cockatiel and "Clancy" the cat), Sylvia fills that void by lavishing all of her sweetness onto the animals that visit Governor Animal Clinic. In no time at all, Sylvia became an important part of the staff and is such a pleasure to be around. We feel fortunate to be associated with such an energetic, kind, intelligent and loving co-worker. We know that you'll feel the same when you have the pleasure of meeting Sylvia !

Trish & Sylvia

Trish's bio soon to come................

                                                Vil and Jack

Vilaphanh Chanthavisouk (better known around here as Vil), was welcomed into the GAC family in November of '06.  What we ever did without him--we'll never know, but feel incredibly fortunate to have him here with us now!  Vil is an extraordinary employee, lending his varied skills and knowledge throughout the clinic.  An absolute joy to work with, he is as fresh at the end of the day as when he arrives in the morning!  Always courteous, helpful and kind, there is always something to learn from Vil!

Vil was born in Thailand in 1984, and one month later moved to the United States.  He spent most of his young life growing up in Fresno, CA., but now calls San Diego his home.
Vil graduated from UCSD in 2006, majoring in General Biology, and plans to attend vet school.
Vil has many interests which include playing football with friends, hiking, running, keeping reptiles (leopard geckos, snakes, and turtles!), and enjoying his tropical fish. He shares his life with one of our favorite adopted dogs, Captain Jack Sparrow, a full-of-personality chihuahua and Jedi, his red dachshund.

                                                   Summer and "Maizie"

Good fortune was with us in September of 2007... when Summer Adamson came to Governor Animal Clinic.  She was born and raised in San Diego, a true Southern California Girl.  She has been a veterinary assistant since 2006, and will be going to school in January of '09 to acheive her R.V.T. license.  After spending any time with Summer, it is quite obvious animals and caring for them is her passion.  That is especially true of her very own "Charlie" & "Allie" (cats), and her pride-n-joy "Maizie" (her itty bitty mini dachshund).

Summer lives with her wife and two adorable children in Julian.  Through sun, sleet and snow, Summer makes the long haul down to University City (she shows dedication in so many aspects of her life, which is why we appreciate her so much!) to make it her priority to give your pets the best possible loving and quality care they deserve.

The best part of Summer's day is when she gets to spend quality time with her kids. Also high on her list of fun things to do is playing softball and basketball, playing with "Maizie", and visiting with friends.

Also in the Outpatient area at GAC, but no picture or bio available at this time
