Outpatient Nurses and Veterinary Assistants
Our OPNs (out-patient nurses) are made up of both RVTs and trained veterinary assistants. The out-patient nurse is primarily responsible for admitting patients into exam rooms for their veterinary exams. This includes getting weights, temperatures and collecting important background information and vitals, so the veterinarian is fully prepared when he or she begins the exam. The OPNs also make up the majority of prescriptions and perform the in-house labwork (many of the in-house lab results are finished while you are still here, so the appropriate treatment can begin immediately). OPNs are responsible for keeping our shelves of medications, food, supplements and pet products ordered and stocked. Our dedicated OPNs are always available for technician appointments and phone consults (to help with pet behavior problems, questions regarding the medications dispensed to treat your pet, bereavement counseling, etc.).
What is a Veterinary Technician? Veterinary technicians offer much of the same care for pets that nurses offer for people. Credentialed technicians have graduated from a two or four year AVMA-accredited program with an associate's or bachelor's degree in veterinary technology.
Veterinary technology programs teach how to;
obtain and record patient case histories
collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures
provide specialized nursing care
prepare animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery
assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures
expose and develop radiographs
advise and educate animal owners
supervise and train practice personnel
perform dental cleanings

Anita
with "Peanut" &
"Gretchen" A
very rare moment.....Anita relaxing! ('89-'04 '95-'10)
(with Jake, Gretchen, Lexi & Molly)
Anita Sly, a registered veterinary technician (RVT), joined our clinic in
February 1999. She works in our out-patient nursing area of the
clinic, keeping things running smoothly for the doctors and keeping
everyone on track. She enjoys antique collecting, landscaping,
animal husbandry, and camping during her free time. Her free time
is limited because she keeps very busy with her many dogs, cats,
birds, tortoise, fish, and various rescued and rehabilitated
homeless animals. |

Cindy and
Conga
Cindy LaValle, R.V.T.
is a San Diego native, born and raised in the Bonita
area....she took to the road and found some time for a diversion in
Las Vegas for a few years, then came back to her hometown where she
now resides, works and plays. Her playtime consists of spending
time with her four cats, two dogs, and her quarter horse, and when
the weather is nice, you can find her with the wind in her hair as
she rides her Harley throughout San Diego, Laughlin, Palm Springs,
and someday, her dream ride will be to make the long trek to
Sturgis for the annual Black Hills Sturgis Rally in South Dakota.
Cindy graduated the Mesa College Registered Veterinary Technician
program in 2000, and came to us in September of 2003. Cindy splits
her time between the out-patient nurse and in-patient nurse areas,
providing her expertise in both positions. She also works as a
part-time bartender. |

Summer and "Maizie"
Good fortune was with us in September of 2007... when Summer Adamson came to Governor Animal Clinic. She was born and raised in San Diego, a true Southern California Girl. She has been a veterinary assistant since 2006, and graduated with an R.V.T. license in August 2009. After spending any time with Summer, it is quite obvious animals and caring for them is her passion. That is especially true of her very own "Charlie" & "Allie" (cats), and her pride-n-joy "Maizie" (her itty bitty mini dachshund), Penny the mini dachshund, and Taylor, a little blind rescued mini dachshund.
Summer lives with her wife and two adorable children in Poway. Through sun, sleet and snow, Summer makes the long haul to University City (she shows dedication in so many aspects of her life, which is why we appreciate her so much!) to make it her priority to give your pets the best possible loving and quality care they deserve.
The best part of Summer's day is when she gets to spend quality time with her kids. Also high on her list of fun things to do is playing softball and basketball, playing with her pets, and visiting with friends.
